How to Measure a Wall for Wallpaper

Short answer: measure the full wall at its widest and tallest points, including doors and windows, and add 2–4 inches (5–10 cm) to both numbers for trimming. Order that width × height. You need a tape measure, a pencil and about five minutes.

Our murals are printed to the dimensions you choose and arrive as numbered vertical panels about 40 in (100 cm) wide, so an accurate measurement matters more than counting rolls.

What do I need to measure a wall?

  • A metal tape measure (a laser measure is fine for long walls)
  • A pencil and paper, or your phone's notes app
  • A step ladder for tall walls

How do I measure the width?

  1. Measure from corner to corner along the top of the wall, just below the ceiling.
  2. Measure again across the middle and along the bottom, just above the baseboard.
  3. Write down the largest of the three. Walls are rarely perfectly square, and the largest number is the one the mural has to cover.

How do I measure the height?

  1. Measure from the floor (or the top of the baseboard) to the ceiling at the left end of the wall.
  2. Repeat in the center and at the right end.
  3. Write down the largest of the three.

Should I subtract doors and windows?

No. Measure the whole wall as if the openings were not there. The mural is printed for the full wall so the design lines up across the openings, and the installer trims around doors, windows, sockets and switches on the wall.

How much extra should I add for trimming?

Add 2–4 inches (5–10 cm) to the width and 2–4 inches (5–10 cm) to the height. Ceilings, corners and floors are rarely straight, and the allowance gives the installer room to trim a clean edge. Here is how it works on a few common walls:

Measured wall Order at least (+2 in / 5 cm) Order up to (+4 in / 10 cm)
96 × 96 in (244 × 244 cm) 98 × 98 in (249 × 249 cm) 100 × 100 in (254 × 254 cm)
131 × 66 in (333 × 168 cm) 133 × 68 in (338 × 173 cm) 135 × 70 in (343 × 178 cm)
287 × 245 cm (113 × 96.5 in) 292 × 250 cm (115 × 98.5 in) 297 × 255 cm (117 × 100.5 in)

Then pick the closest listed size that is at least as big as your result. Our wallpaper size guide and calculator walks through these examples against the standard sizes.

Inches or centimeters?

Either works. Product sizes are listed in inches, and the Find your size tool on each product page accepts inches or centimeters. To convert, 1 inch = 2.54 cm, so a 250 cm wall is 98.4 in.

What about sloped ceilings, stairs or more than one wall?

For a wall with a sloped ceiling or a staircase, measure the tallest point and the full width, and note where the slope or stairs start. For a mural that wraps around more than one wall, measure each wall separately. In both cases, contact us through the custom orders page before ordering so we can check the crop and placement with you.

What if my wall size isn't listed?

Choose the next size up and trim the excess, or ask for a custom size. Every mural is made to order, and we can prepare the artwork for your exact dimensions and adjust the crop. See custom size wall murals.

What should I check before hanging?

  • The wall is clean, dry, dust-free and fully cured. Fresh paint must cure completely first.
  • The panels are laid out in their numbered order and the print looks right.
  • You have wallpaper adhesive if you ordered Non-Woven or Textured; it is not included.
